Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine
UNESCO World Heritage
北口本宮冨士浅間神社
This Shinto shrine in Fujiyoshida is one of about 1,300 Sengen (Asama) shrines in Japan linked to the deity of Mt. Fuji. It is said to date from 100 CE, and in 788 deities were enshrined to calm the mountain's eruptions. The large forest grounds are one of the biggest in Japan. A gate here marks the start of the Yoshidaguchi climbing trail.

Tips for Muslim visitors
- The shrine grounds contain the 'Ascending Gate', the traditional starting point of the Yoshida Trail up Mt. Fuji, so climbers often pass through here.
- JNTO's Muslim guide lists a prayer room at Fuji-Q Highland, in the same city (Fujiyoshida); its food court also serves Muslim-friendly food and drinks.
- Shinto shrines are open to everyone. Bowing, clapping and washing at the purification basin are optional; you can simply look around.
- Shrines are usually busiest at New Year and during festivals. Early morning is often the calmest time to visit.
- Charms, fortune slips and votive tablets are religious items. You do not need to buy or use them.
