Shimonoseki Aquarium Kaikyokan

市立しものせき水族館 海響館

Kaikyokan is the city aquarium of Shimonoseki. A large tank recreates the strong currents of the strait, and "Fugupedia" introduces the pufferfish that Shimonoseki is famous for. Penguin Village is one of the largest penguin exhibits in Japan, and there are dolphin and sea lion shows. The aquarium reopened after renewal in August 2025.

Usually 9:30–17:30 (last entry 17:00).

Adults 2,500 yen; elementary and junior high students 1,200 yen; preschool children 500 yen (group prices in brackets on the page).

Getting there

3 minutes on foot from the Kaikyokan-mae bus stop.

Good to know

  • No parking at the aquarium; there are paid car parks nearby.

Tips for Muslim visitors

  • You may bring your own food, but eating inside the aquarium is not allowed; eat at the 3F rooftop plaza or outside (e.g. the boardwalk).
  • Same-day re-entry is possible if you keep your ticket.
  • Photos and videos are allowed, but flash is not allowed at tanks marked for flash-sensitive animals.
  • Aquariums and zoos take a few hours to see. Plan a prayer time in your visit and check the map for quiet spaces.
  • Snack stands may sell sausages and other pork products. Check the ingredients or bring your own snacks where allowed.
