Akama Jingu
赤間神宮
Akama Jingu is a shrine in Shimonoseki dedicated to Emperor Antoku, who died at age 8 in the Battle of Dannoura. Its bright red Suitenmon gate, said to be modeled on the sea god's palace, is a symbol of the Kanmon Strait. In the grounds are the emperor's tomb and a treasure hall with records of the Genpei War. The shrine's former temple is the setting of the ghost story "Hoichi the Earless".
