Akiyoshido Cave

Akiyoshido Cave

秋芳洞

Akiyoshido is a large limestone cave about 100 meters under the Akiyoshidai plateau, and it is a Special Natural Monument of Japan. It is one of the largest caves in Japan, with more than 10 km of passages. Visitors walk a tourist route of about 1 km and see rock formations such as the 'hundred plates' terraces. The cave stays about 17°C all year, so it is comfortable in any season and on rainy days.

Tips for Muslim visitors

  • Allow 1 hour or more for a round trip through the cave.
  • The temperature inside the cave stays at about 17°C all year, so walking is comfortable in any season.
  • An elevator in the middle of the cave goes directly up to the Akiyoshidai Plateau.
  • Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
  • Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.
