Mogami River Boat Ride (Tozawa)
最上川舟下り
This sightseeing boat ride travels down the Mogami River from Tozawa Village. Experienced boatmen guide the boat through a scenic valley that changes with each season. The ride goes about 12 km downstream. Solo visitors can join, and meals on board are available with a reservation.

Open daily all year: 8:30–17:00 (April to November) and 9:00–16:30 (December to March). Boat times differ from these hours.
- Getting there
About 5 minutes on foot from Furukuchi Station on the JR Rikuu West Line, or about 90 minutes by car from Yamagata City.
- Time needed
The ride takes about 1 hour to go down 12 km.

Good to know
- Meals on board need a reservation by phone or fax. For fares, see the operator's official website.
- Smoking is not allowed on the boats. The route may change with water level, wind and weather.
Tips for Muslim visitors
- The boat ride takes about 1 hour to travel 12 km down the river, so plan your prayer time before or after the ride.
- You can eat a meal on board, but it must be reserved in advance. The lunch boxes use local ingredients, so ask about the contents when you book if you need food without pork or alcohol.
- From December 1 to March 31 a winter boat with large kotatsu (low tables covered with blankets) runs. Plan for the cold if you ride in winter.
- Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
- Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.
