Kumano Hayatama Taisha
UNESCO World Heritage
熊野速玉大社
Kumano Hayatama Taisha is a bright red shrine near the mouth of the Kumano River in Shingu City. It is one of the three Kumano Sanzan grand shrines, and its grounds are part of a World Heritage site. One story says it was moved here from Mt. Kamikura about 2,000 years ago. Visitors can see a sacred nagi tree over 1,000 years old and old treasures, some offered in 1390, in the Kumano Shimpokan museum.

- The grounds have few steps, there is a slope up to the worship hall, and it is only a few minutes from the car park.
- Kamikura Shrine (Gotobiki-iwa rock) is a separate site; the shrine says it can be visited before or after Hayatama Taisha. Visitors may simply look around.
- Shinto shrines are open to everyone. Bowing, clapping and washing at the purification basin are optional; you can simply look around.
