Yuki-no-Otani Snow Wall

Yuki-no-Otani is a famous walk between huge walls of snow near Murodo, at about 2,450 meters on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. This is one of the snowiest areas in the world, and the walls can be up to about 20 meters high. In spring, one side of the snow-cleared road is opened as a walking path so visitors can walk between the walls.

Getting there

From Tateyama Station, take the cable car to Bijodaira (about 7 min) and the Tateyama Highland Bus to Murodo (about 50 min), then walk about 3 minutes.

Time needed

The walking section is about 500 m; the round trip takes about 35 minutes.

Good to know

  • Every year the Alpine Route's spring season begins in April with Yuki-no-Otani. Check the official Alpine Route site for exact dates.
  • Warm clothing (down or thick jacket), gloves and a hat are essential.
  • Wear shoes with non-slip soles or trekking shoes.
