Murodo-daira

室堂平

Murodo-daira is a high plateau at about 2,450 meters, the main sightseeing base of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. It is one of Japan's leading mountain sightseeing areas. Its symbol is Mikurigaike Pond, and paved walking paths lead around the area with wide mountain views. It is much colder here than in the town below.

Getting there

From Tateyama Station, take the cable car to Bijodaira (about 7 min), then the Tateyama Highland Bus to Murodo (about 50 min).

Time needed

The Mikurigaike-Enmadai walking course takes about 1 hour at an easy pace.

From Ogizawa Station on the Nagano side, a round trip to Murodo takes about 5-6 hours.

Good to know

The temperature at Murodo (2,450 m) is more than 10°C lower than on the ground; bring warm clothes.
Walking paths are paved and easy to walk, but sandals and heeled shoes are not suitable.
