The East Gardens are the part of the Imperial Palace grounds that is open to the public. They stand on the site of the innermost walls of Edo Castle, the former seat of the Tokugawa shoguns. The Ote-mon Gate was once the main entrance to the castle, and inside you can see the stone foundations of the former castle tower. The Ninomaru area has a garden that dates back to the Edo period and was restored in 1968.
