Iya Valley Peeing Boy Statue (Shonben Kozo)

祖谷渓の小便小僧

This small statue of a boy stands on the edge of a high cliff above the Iya Valley, at one of its most dangerous spots. It is said that local children once stood on this cliff to show their courage, and the statue was made as a symbol of that brave, innocent spirit. From the roadside you can look down into the deep green gorge.

Tips for Muslim visitors

  • The statue stands at Nanamagari, said to be the most difficult section of the old Iya road, 200 m above the valley floor.
  • Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
  • Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.
  • Plan your visit around prayer times. Below are today's prayer times for Tokushima and the verified places to pray nearby.
  • Food stalls and shops near popular sights usually do not have halal certification. Check the ingredients, or choose from the verified places on this site.
