Nikko Toshogu is a Shinto shrine in Nikko and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has more than 400 years of history. Its Yomeimon Gate is decorated with more than 500 brightly colored carvings. The gate looks even more beautiful when surrounded by autumn leaves.

Getting there

From Tobu Nikko Station, take a bus to Omotesando Bus Stop (about 7 minutes), then walk about 4 minutes to the shrine.

Good to know

  • Tobu Nikko Station, the main gateway to Nikko, has a prayer room that can be used all year from 8:20 to 16:00.
  • To use the station prayer room, ask at the Tobu Nikko Station Tourist Center on the first floor. Mornings are busy, so tell them in advance.
  • Morning is busy at the station, so give advance notice if you want to use its prayer room.

Tips for Muslim visitors

  • To reach the inner shrine (Okusha) you climb a flight of 207 stone steps, so allow extra time and energy.
  • The prayer room at Tobu Nikko Station (the access station for the shrine) can be used year-round from 8:20 to 16:00; ask at the Tobu Nikko Station Tourist Center on the 1st floor.
  • Shinto shrines are open to everyone. Bowing, clapping and washing at the purification basin are optional; you can simply look around.
  • Shrines are usually busiest at New Year and during festivals. Early morning is often the calmest time to visit.
  • Charms, fortune slips and votive tablets are religious items. You do not need to buy or use them.

  • Food stalls and shops near popular sights usually do not have halal certification. Check the ingredients, or choose from the verified places on this site.
