Lake Chuzenji

中禅寺湖

Lake Chuzenji is a scenic lake in the Chugushi area of Nikko. It has been a popular summer resort since the Meiji era (1868–1912). Former villas of foreign ambassadors still stand near the lake. In autumn, the lake is surrounded by beautiful colored leaves.

Getting there

From Tobu Nikko Station, take a bus to Chuzenji Onsen bus stop (about 45 minutes).

From JR Nikko Station, the bus to Chuzenji Onsen takes about 50 minutes, then walk about 5 minutes.

Good to know

Former villas for foreign ambassadors remain near the lake.
Tobu Nikko Station, the main gateway to Nikko, has a prayer room that can be used all year from 8:20 to 16:00.
To use the station prayer room, ask at the Tobu Nikko Station Tourist Center on the first floor. Mornings are busy, so tell them in advance.

Tips for Muslim visitors

In the autumn-leaf season the Nikko tourism association recommends arriving early in the morning or allowing plenty of extra time, as traffic to the lake can be very slow.
Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.
