Kunozan Toshogu Shrine
久能山東照宮
Kunozan Toshogu is a shrine on Mt. Kuno in Shizuoka City, looking over Suruga Bay. It is where the remains of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first Tokugawa shogun, were first placed, as he wished. The main shrine building is a National Treasure. Visitors climb 1,159 stone steps from the bottom or ride a ropeway from Nihondaira, and a museum next to the shrine shows historical items.

- Opening hours
Open 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Ticket sales end 10 minutes before closing.
- Admission
Shrine visit: 700 yen for adults and high school students, 300 yen for elementary and junior high school students.
- Getting there
The ropeway takes about 5 minutes from the top of Nihondaira. From JR Shizuoka Station, take the Shizutetsu Just Line Nihondaira Line bus to the terminal stop.
You can also walk up 1,159 stone steps from the foot of Mt. Kuno, which takes about 20 minutes. There is no road to the shrine by car.

Good to know
- Because of its location, you can only visit the shrine if you are able to climb stairs.
- There is free parking for up to 200 cars at the top of Nihondaira.
Tips for Muslim visitors
- From the foot of Mt. Kuno you climb 1,159 stone steps to the shrine, which takes about 20 minutes. Alternatively, a 5-minute ropeway runs from the top of Nihondaira.
- Shinto shrines are open to everyone. Bowing, clapping and washing at the purification basin are optional; you can simply look around.
- Shrines are usually busiest at New Year and during festivals. Early morning is often the calmest time to visit.
- Charms, fortune slips and votive tablets are religious items. You do not need to buy or use them.

- Food stalls and shops near popular sights usually do not have halal certification. Check the ingredients, or choose from the verified places on this site.
