Mount Fuji

UNESCO World Heritage

富士山

Mount Fuji is the great volcano seen from both Shizuoka and Yamanashi. People have long worshipped it as a sacred mountain, and pilgrims trained at places such as Shiraito Falls. It is registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, and Shizuoka Prefecture runs a World Heritage Centre about it in Fujinomiya. On the Shizuoka side there are three climbing routes: Fujinomiya, Gotemba and Subashiri.

Tips for Muslim visitors

  • The climbing season is early July to early September, and trails are most crowded during the Obon holidays (mid-August). The Yoshida Trail is popular for sunrise and often crowded.
  • A two-day climb with a night in a mountain hut is suggested; between 2pm and 3am the trail is open only to people with a hut reservation. Huts have no running water, which matters for planning wudu.
  • Even in mid-summer the summit is only about 5–8°C, so bring warm layers.
  • Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
  • Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.
  • Plan your visit around prayer times. Below are today's prayer times for Shizuoka and the verified places to pray nearby.
  • Food stalls and shops near popular sights usually do not have halal certification. Check the ingredients, or choose from the verified places on this site.
