Izumo Taisha (Izumo Oyashiro)
出雲大社
Izumo Taisha, also called Izumo Ōyashiro, is one of the oldest and most important Shinto shrines in Japan. Its main hall is believed to have been the tallest building in Japan in medieval times. The current main hall was built in 1744 and is a National Treasure. In front of the Kagura-den hall hangs a huge sacred straw rope (shimenawa).

Tips for Muslim visitors
- Worshippers at Izumo Taisha use a ritual of two bows, four hand claps and a final bow, unlike the usual two claps at other shrines. This is a Shinto worship ritual.
- Shinto shrines are open to everyone. Bowing, clapping and washing at the purification basin are optional; you can simply look around.
- Shrines are usually busiest at New Year and during festivals. Early morning is often the calmest time to visit.
- Charms, fortune slips and votive tablets are religious items. You do not need to buy or use them.
- Plan your visit around prayer times. Below are today's prayer times for Shimane and the verified places to pray nearby.
