Izumo Hinomisaki Lighthouse

Izumo Hinomisaki Lighthouse stands on the cape of Hinomisaki in Taisha Town, Izumo, facing the Sea of Japan. First lit in 1903, it is the tallest stone lighthouse in Japan, about 43.7 m from base to top. Visitors can climb the spiral staircase inside to the viewing deck. From the top you can look out over the sea and the rocky coast.

Visitor information

Opening hours: Inside visits: 9:00–12:00 all year; afternoons 13:00–16:30 (until 17:00 on weekends March–September). Entry ends 20 minutes before closing.
Admission: Visiting donation: 300 yen (junior high school and older).
Getting there: From JR Izumoshi Station, take the Ichibata bus toward Hinomisaki (about 1 hour) to the lighthouse stop, then walk about 5 minutes. By car, about 30 minutes from Izumo IC.

Good to know

There is a midday break from 12:00 to 13:00, when tours and sales stop.
Free for elementary school children and younger, and for disability certificate holders plus one companion.

Reaching the observation deck means climbing 163 steps.
The lighthouse area is a popular place to watch the sunset.
Nearby cafes sell snacks that you can enjoy in the park around the lighthouse.
Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.
