Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine
UNESCO World Heritage
石見銀山
From 1527 to 1923, Iwami Ginzan was one of the world's great silver mines. It is a World Heritage site, partly because the mine sits in a wide natural setting. Visitors can enter the Ryugenji Mabu Mine Shaft, which was in use in 1715 and shows hand mining. The nearby Omori town has a Magistrate's Office, old samurai houses, shrines and shops.
