Chikubu Island (Hogon-ji Temple)

竹生島(宝厳寺)

Chikubu Island is a small island in the north of Lake Biwa, reached by sightseeing boat. On the island are Hogon-ji Temple and Tsukubusuma Shrine. The temple's Kara-mon gate, a National Treasure, was moved from Osaka Castle and is the only surviving structure from that castle. Visitors enjoy the boat ride and the views of the lake.

  • The number of boats changes by season. Check the Biwako Kisen website for the latest schedule.
  • Boats may be cancelled or rescheduled in bad weather.

Tips for Muslim visitors

  • From the boat landing, you reach Hogonji by climbing 165 stone steps. The ferry operator says the steps are very steep and recommends shoes you are used to walking in, such as sneakers.
  • On the standard cruise you get about 70–80 minutes on the island, and walking the full loop of the temple and shrine takes about 60 minutes. Plan your prayer times around the boat schedule.
  • The interior of the main shrine building on the island is not open to the public. Visitors can look at it from outside.
  • Buddhist temples welcome visitors of all faiths. You can enjoy the buildings and gardens without joining any prayer, burning incense or buying charms.
  • Many halls ask you to take off your shoes. Wear socks and shoes that are easy to slip off, and keep a bag for your shoes if none is provided.
  • Photography is often not allowed inside halls. Follow the signs and ask staff if you are unsure.
  • Plan your visit around prayer times. Below are today's prayer times for Shiga and the verified places to pray nearby.
