Nagatoro Hanabishiso (California Poppy) Garden

長瀞 ハナビシソウ園

The Hanabishiso Garden is a seasonal flower field of hanabishiso (California poppies) in Nagatoro, a riverside town in the Chichibu area of Saitama. It is at Hana no Sato, beside the approach road to Mt. Hodo and in front of the former Arai family house. The site is about 10,000 square metres and is run by a local committee. It opens for a few weeks each year in the flower season.

Admission

In 2022 an environmental maintenance contribution of 200 yen was asked; high school students and younger were free.

Getting there

The garden is about a 5-minute walk from Nagatoro Station.

Good to know

  • The garden opens only in the flower season. In 2022 it was open from May 14 to June 12; in 2018 from early May to early June.
  • Free parking for about 20 cars; large vehicles cannot park.

Tips for Muslim visitors

  • Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
  • Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.
