• At high tide the three torii gates seem to float on the sea; at low tide you can walk to them. Check the tide times before you go.
• Tara's tides can rise and fall by up to six meters.

Tips for Muslim visitors

• The view changes completely with the tide (the tidal range is up to about 6 m), so check a tide table before you go.
• At low tide you can walk under the torii gates; at high tide they stand in the sea. Sunrise with high tide is recommended, but it happens on only 2 to 4 days a month.
• The shore around the torii is made of shells, not sand, so wear sneakers rather than sandals.
• The parking area in front of the torii belongs to the fishing port; vehicles are restricted from late March to early April and mid-September to mid-October, when you should use the Ouo Shrine car park across the road.
• Shinto shrines are open to everyone. Bowing, clapping and washing at the purification basin are optional; you can simply look around.
• Shrines are usually busiest at New Year and during festivals. Early morning is often the calmest time to visit.
• Charms, fortune slips and votive tablets are religious items. You do not need to buy or use them.
