Karatsu Castle

唐津城

Karatsu Castle is a hilltop castle by the sea in Karatsu, a coastal city in northern Saga. It was completed in 1608 and at first had no keep. The castle is also called Maizuru, meaning "dancing crane". From the observation deck there is a 360-degree view of the city, the sea and the long pine forest along the coast.

Tips for Muslim visitors

  • A Buddhist stone stupa (Tahoto) carved with Shakyamuni and Taho Buddhas stands to the left of the main path up to the castle; touching it is a local wish custom, and visitors may simply look around.
  • There is a Maizuru Park elevator up to the castle area (small one-way fee).
  • Inside many castle keeps you take off your shoes and climb steep, narrow wooden stairs. Wear socks and clothing that is comfortable for climbing.
  • Castle grounds are large. Plan a prayer stop before or after your visit at one of the places to pray listed below.
