Dotonbori

Dotonbori

道頓堀

Dotonbori is a busy entertainment and food street along a canal in the Namba area. Its name comes from Yasui Doton, who used his own money to dig the river in 1612. Later the area became a center of theater and kabuki, and today it is known for restaurants, shops and bright signs. The Tonbori River Walk along the water has become popular in recent years.

Tips for Muslim visitors

  • Japan's national tourism organization notes there are several Muslim-friendly restaurants in the Dotonbori area, such as MOMO's Cafe & Restaurant.
  • Street food and market snacks often contain pork, lard or alcohol (such as mirin or sake), even when this is not obvious. Ask before you buy.
