Tamaudun Royal Mausoleum
UNESCO World Heritage
玉陵
Tamaudun is the royal mausoleum of the second Sho Dynasty of the Ryukyu Kingdom, near Shurijo Castle in Naha. It was built in 1501 during the reign of King Sho Shin. The tomb is carved out of limestone bedrock and is modeled after Shurijo Castle, with a gabled tile roof and stone lion statues. It was damaged in World War II and restored in 1977. In 2018 it became the first building in Okinawa designated a National Treasure. Tamaudun is part of the UNESCO World Heritage property "Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu".
