第一牧志公設市場

Daiichi Makishi Public Market is known as "Okinawa's kitchen". It began as an open-air black market soon after the war and opened as a public market in 1950; the current building opened in March 2023. The ground floor has fishmongers, butchers and grocers. A unique system called "mochiage" lets you buy food on the ground floor and have it cooked at a restaurant on the second floor. The market is a short walk from Kokusai Street.

Visitor information

Opening hours: 8:00–22:00 (varies by shop). Last order for cooking meat/fish on 1F is 19:45; 2F restaurants 20:00.
Closed: 4th Sunday of each month (except December), New Year (Jan 1–3) and Obon (lunar July 16–17). Some shops have other days off.
Getting there: 9 minutes on foot from Yui Rail Makishi Station, or 10 minutes from Miebashi Station. About 6 km (16 minutes) by car from Naha Airport. No parking.

The 1st floor has 75 shops selling meat, fish and fresh food; the 2nd floor has restaurants.
"Mochiage": buy ingredients at a 1st-floor shop and have them cooked at a 2nd-floor restaurant.

Tips for Muslim visitors

Meat stalls on the 1st floor sell pork as well as beef.
With 'mochiage', you choose seafood or meat on the 1st floor and a 2nd-floor restaurant cooks it for you, so you can pick your own ingredients such as fish.
Street food and market snacks often contain pork, lard or alcohol (such as mirin or sake), even when this is not obvious. Ask before you buy.
Some markets and shopping streets ask visitors not to eat while walking. Eat at the stall or in a rest area.
