Katsuren Castle Ruins

UNESCO World Heritage

勝連城跡

Katsuren Castle Ruins sit on top of a limestone hill in Uruma City, 98 meters above sea level. The site is believed to have become a fortress around the 13th century. In the 15th century it was home to Lord Amawari, who brought wealth to the area through overseas trade; the castle fell in 1458. From the top there is a wide view of the Pacific Ocean. The site is part of the UNESCO World Heritage property "Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu".
