Usuki Stone Buddhas
臼杵石仏
The Usuki Stone Buddhas are figures carved directly into the rock face in the hills of Usuki. They are believed to date from the Heian to the Kamakura period, but nobody knows who made them or why. In 1995 they became the first rock-carved Buddha figures in Japan to be named a National Treasure. Visitors walk a short path to see the groups of figures.
