Beppu Ropeway

別府ロープウェイ

Beppu Ropeway carries visitors up Mount Tsurumi (1,375 m) in Aso-Kuju National Park, above the hot-spring city of Beppu. Its large cabins hold up to 101 people, one of the biggest ropeways in Kyushu. From the top you can look over Beppu Bay and the city.

Visitor information

Closed: No regular closing days, but service may stop for bad weather or maintenance.
Admission: Adults (junior high and older) 1,800 yen round trip; children (age 4 to elementary) 900 yen round trip; seniors (70+) 1,700 yen round trip (fares as of February 1, 2023).
Getting there: About 15 minutes by car from JR Beppu Station.
Time needed: The ride to the top takes about 10 minutes.

Tips for Muslim visitors

The 101-person gondola climbs about 800 m in height over a 1,816 m line in about 10 minutes.
A shrine stands in front of the summit station, and various deities are enshrined along the summit walking path (a temple-stamp route and Seven Lucky Gods route). Visitors may simply walk the path and enjoy the views.
The Kyushu Shochu-kan shop in front of the ropeway's main car park sells over 500 brands of shochu (alcohol).
Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.
