Hells of Beppu (Jigoku Meguri)
別府地獄めぐり
The Hells of Beppu are a group of hot springs in the Kannawa area of Beppu that are for looking at, not bathing in. The name "jigoku" (hell) comes from an old record that called this steaming land impossible to approach. Visitors walk between the hells to see bright blue and red pools, a geyser, and boiling mud. Four of them are a National Site of Scenic Beauty.

Tips for Muslim visitors
- Touring all the hells at once takes about two to two and a half hours.
- Foot baths are available free of charge in designated areas at the hot springs, so you can enjoy the hot water with only your feet bare.
- Beppu Masjid (10-19 Wakakusa-cho, Beppu) is about 8 minutes by bus from Beppu Station to the Mochigahama stop, then a 1-minute walk (about 7 minutes by taxi).
- At most public hot springs in Japan people bathe naked, in baths separated by gender, and swimwear is usually not allowed. If you prefer privacy, look for a private bath (kashikiri-buro), an in-room bath or a foot bath.
- Wash your body at the shower area before entering the bath. Many visitors who want to stay covered choose a foot bath instead.
