Yahiko Shrine

彌彦神社

Yahiko Shrine is a Shinto shrine in the town of Yahiko, south of Niigata City, known as the Ichinomiya (leading shrine) of the old Echigo Province. Its Treasure Hall shows items handed down at the shrine, such as swords and calligraphy. Nearby Yahiko Park is popular for its bright autumn leaves, and the town holds an annual lantern festival.

Opening hours

Treasure Hall: 9:00 to 16:00.

Closed

Treasure Hall is closed on Mondays (next day if a holiday) and during January and February.

Admission

Treasure Hall admission: adults 300 yen.

Getting there

From JR Yahiko Station the shrine is about 1 km, around a 15-minute walk.

By train, change to the Yahiko Line at Tsubame-Sanjo Station and ride to the last stop, Yahiko.

Large free parking lots are available around the shrine (some become paid during the chrysanthemum festival).

Tips for Muslim visitors

Hiking from the shrine area to the 634 m summit of Mt. Yahiko takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. The trail is fairly easy.
Instead of hiking, you can walk about 10 minutes from the shrine to the Yahikoyama Ropeway base station; the ropeway reaches the summit in about 5 minutes.
Shinto shrines are open to everyone. Bowing, clapping and washing at the purification basin are optional; you can simply look around.
Shrines are usually busiest at New Year and during festivals. Early morning is often the calmest time to visit.
Charms, fortune slips and votive tablets are religious items. You do not need to buy or use them.
