Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel

Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel

清津峡渓谷トンネル

Kiyotsu Gorge in Tokamachi is known as one of Japan's three great gorges, with huge columnar rock walls and an emerald-green river. A 750-meter walking tunnel leads visitors through the rock to view the gorge. The tunnel was renovated as an art work for the 2018 art festival, so it now mixes art with nature. Autumn leaves usually peak from late October to early November.

Tips for Muslim visitors

  • On the busiest high-season days, entry is limited to visitors with tickets bought in advance; no tickets are sold on site those days.
  • The toilet inside the tunnel (at the 2nd viewpoint) can have a queue, so the official site recommends using the public toilets at the No.1 car park.
  • Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
  • Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.
  • Plan your visit around prayer times. Below are today's prayer times for Niigata and the verified places to pray nearby.
