Zenkoji Temple
善光寺
Zenkoji is a large Buddhist temple in Nagano City. Its history goes back to the 7th century, and the temple has moved several times. The main hall, rebuilt here in 1707, is one of the largest wooden halls in eastern Japan and a National Treasure. Visitors can walk the long approach, see the main hall and Sanmon Gate, and try the dark underground passage.

Tips for Muslim visitors
- You take off your shoes to climb the stairs to the second floor of the Sanmon Gate, which gives views over the temple grounds.
- Under the main hall is a dark corridor linked to a Buddhist legend about touching a 'key of enlightenment'. Joining it is optional; visitors can simply look around the grounds and the history museum.
- Buddhist temples welcome visitors of all faiths. You can enjoy the buildings and gardens without joining any prayer, burning incense or buying charms.
- Many halls ask you to take off your shoes. Wear socks and shoes that are easy to slip off, and keep a bag for your shoes if none is provided.
- Photography is often not allowed inside halls. Follow the signs and ask staff if you are unsure.
