Takachiho Gorge
高千穂峡
Takachiho Gorge is a deep river valley in Takachiho Town, a place known for many Japanese myths. It was formed by an eruption of Mount Aso and runs for about 7 km, with cliffs about 80 to 100 meters high. Its best-known sight is Manai Falls, which drops 17 meters into the river. Visitors walk along the gorge or rent a rowing boat to see the falls from below.

Tips for Muslim visitors
- The tourism association's guided walk of Takachiho Shrine and the gorge takes about 2 hours on foot, so wear comfortable clothes.
- Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
- Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.
