Obi Castle Town

飫肥城下町

Obi in Nichinan was the castle town of the Ito family's Obi domain for about 280 years from 1588. Its historic streets are nicknamed the "Little Kyoto of Kyushu". Visitors walk past moss-covered stone walls, the rebuilt Otemon Gate, samurai houses and old shops. The Obi Castle Historical Museum shows items from the Ito family's history.

About 5 minutes by car or 20 minutes on foot from JR Obi Station.

Good to know

  • Free parking for 150 cars at the Obi Castle Tourist Parking Lot.
  • The Ayumichan Map includes tickets to several venues and five vouchers for use in town.
  • The Obi Castle Historical Museum displays items about the history of the Ito family.

Tips for Muslim visitors

  • Stays in the renovated samurai houses do not include meals, but they have kitchens so you can cook your own food.
  • Inside many castle keeps you take off your shoes and climb steep, narrow wooden stairs. Wear socks and clothing that is comfortable for climbing.
