Zao Fox Village
宮城蔵王キツネ村
Zao Fox Village is an animal park in the hills of Shiroishi, in southern Miyagi. More than 100 foxes of six types, including Ezo red foxes and silver foxes, walk freely around the grounds. Visitors can watch the foxes up close, and at the right time of year you may even hold a baby fox. Please follow the staff rules, because the animals are not tame pets.
Visitor information
- Getting there
About 20 minutes by car from JR Shiroishi-Zao Station, or about 20 minutes from Shiroishi IC on the Tohoku Expressway.
Hours and fees can change. Please check the official website before you go.
Good to know
- The foxes run free, so they may bite. Follow the rules and keep belongings secure.
- Entry is restricted for adults with multiple elementary-school-age children; check the rules before visiting with kids.
- If you come at the right time of year, you can cuddle a baby fox.
Tips for Muslim visitors
- Keep loose items out of the foxes' reach; foxes have died from swallowing items.
- In the petting area, visitors are lent a jacket that reduces the foxes' scent and protects clothing.
- Aquariums and zoos take a few hours to see. Plan a prayer time in your visit and check the map for quiet spaces.
- Snack stands may sell sausages and other pork products. Check the ingredients or bring your own snacks where allowed.
