Godaido Hall, Matsushima
瑞巌寺五大堂
Godaido is a small temple hall on a tiny island in Matsushima Bay, joined to the shore by red bridges. The present building was built in 1604 by Date Masamune and is the oldest example of Momoyama-period architecture in Tohoku. The bridges have gaps between the boards on purpose, so people walk carefully.
