東寺
To-ji is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the head temple of the Shingon school of Buddhism. In 823, Emperor Saga gave the temple to the monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi). Its five-story pagoda, about 55 meters tall, is the tallest wooden structure in Japan; the present one was rebuilt in 1644 and is a landmark of Kyoto. In the Kodo lecture hall, 21 Buddhist statues are arranged as a three-dimensional mandala. On the 21st of every month, the Kobo-ichi market is held on the grounds.
The temple gates open at 5:00 and close at 17:00.
The Kondo (Main Hall) and Kodo (Lecture Hall) are open 8:00 to 17:00 all year. Last entry is 16:30.
Entry to the Miedo hall and the Jikido hall is free.
Kondo and Kodo halls: adults 800 yen, high school students 400 yen, junior high and younger 300 yen. Fees can change during special openings.
