西本願寺(本願寺)
Nishi Hongwanji is the head temple of the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji school of Buddhism, facing Horikawa Street, about 15 minutes on foot from Kyoto Station. It began as a hall built after the death of the monk Shinran and moved to this place in 1591. It is the finest example of Momoyama-period architecture in Kyoto, with huge halls, gold-trimmed gates and the oldest Noh stage in Japan. Highlights are the Goeido and Amidado halls and the richly carved Karamon gate. The temple is part of the World Heritage site.
Open 5:30–17:00.
About 15 minutes on foot from JR Kyoto Station, or take a city bus to "Nishi Hongwanji-mae", which is right in front of the temple.
From Kyoto Station, City Bus Lines 9, 28 or 75 go to Nishi Hongwanji-mae. A taxi takes about 5 minutes.
