高山寺
Kozan-ji is a quiet temple in the mountain forest of Toganoo, northwest Kyoto, with tall cedar trees and moss along the path. The monk Myoe rebuilt it in the early 13th century with the help of the retired Emperor Go-Toba. You can see Sekisui-in, Myoe's simple former home from the Kamakura period, and the grounds hold what is said to be Japan's oldest tea field. The temple is famous for the scrolls of playful animals (Choju Jinbutsu Giga). It is part of the World Heritage site and is well known for autumn leaves.
About 5 minutes' walk from the JR Bus "Toganoo" bus stop.
From Kyoto Station, take the JR Sagano Line to Enmachi Station (about 7 min), then the West Japan JR Bus to Toganoo (about 31 min). About 48 minutes in total.
