Kamigamo Shrine
UNESCO World Heritage
上賀茂神社(賀茂別雷神社)
Kamigamo Shrine, also called Kamowakeikazuchi Shrine, is one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto, dating back to the 7th century, before Kyoto became the capital. It was the family shrine of the ancient Kamo clan. A large orange torii gate marks the entrance, and a straight white path crosses a wide grassy field to the main hall, which stands where two clear streams meet. Do not miss the two white-sand mounds near the main building. The shrine is part of the World Heritage site, and its Aoi Matsuri is one of Kyoto's three major festivals.
