Fushimi Inari Taisha

Fushimi Inari Taisha

伏見稲荷大社

Fushimi Inari Taisha is a Shinto shrine with a history going back to 711, when its deity, Inari Okami, is said to have come to the mountain here. The shrine grounds include the whole of Inariyama, a 233-meter holy mountain. It is known for the Senbon Torii, or "Thousand Torii": since the Edo period, worshippers have donated red torii gates to express prayers and thanks. A path lined with several thousand torii leads to the top of the mountain, passing over 10,000 small stone mounds called otsuka along the way.

Good to know

  • The full mountain walk (Oyama-meguri) is about 4 km and takes about 2 hours, with many steps. Mount Inari is 233 m high.
  • Kyoto City advises taking JR or Keihan trains instead of City Bus South 5, which is often delayed.
  • No eating or drinking except in the free rest areas.
  • Do not block the narrow paths while taking photos. No drones.
  • Do not enter off-limits areas, including the main sanctuary buildings.

Tips for Muslim visitors

  • Walking the whole mountain trail through the torii gates takes about two to three hours, so plan your prayer times around it.
  • JNTO recommends visiting from late morning to mid-afternoon.
  • Eating and drinking are only allowed in the marked free rest areas, not along the paths.
  • Shinto shrines are open to everyone. Bowing, clapping and washing at the purification basin are optional; you can simply look around.
  • Shrines are usually busiest at New Year and during festivals. Early morning is often the calmest time to visit.
  • Charms, fortune slips and votive tablets are religious items. You do not need to buy or use them.
  • Plan your visit around prayer times. Below are today's prayer times for Kyoto and the verified places to pray nearby.
