Arashiyama and Sagano is an area in western Kyoto known for its history and nature. Its symbol is Togetsukyo, a wooden bridge over the Katsura River in front of Arashiyama Mountain, which has been a landmark for over 400 years. Nearby are the Bamboo Grove Road and Tenryu-ji, a major Zen temple built in 1339 on the site of Emperor Go-Daigo's villa and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its pond garden uses the hills of Arashiyama as "borrowed scenery". Spring cherry blossoms and autumn colors bring large crowds.
Tenryu-ji Temple garden: 8:30–17:00 (last entry 16:50).
Tenryu-ji Temple garden: high school and older 500 yen, elementary and junior high 300 yen; the temple halls are 300 yen extra.
To Togetsukyo Bridge: Randen Arashiyama Station 2 minutes, Hankyu Arashiyama Station 8 minutes, JR Saga-Arashiyama Station 11 minutes on foot.
