Misumi West Port opened in 1887 and was one of the three biggest ports of the Meiji era. Its stone wharf and waterways have stayed almost the same since they were built. In July 2015 it became a World Heritage site together with the Miike Coal Mine and Manda Pit in Arao City. The port faces the Amakusa Oyano Peninsula.
