Shimanto River and Sada Chinkabashi
四万十川 佐田沈下橋
The Shimanto River is 196 km long, the longest river on Shikoku, and is known as Japan's last free-flowing river. Many low "chinkabashi" bridges without side rails cross it; they are built to go under water during floods. The Sada Chinkabashi is the longest of them and the closest to the river mouth. Visitors can cycle to the bridge, take canoe or kayak tours, or ride a traditional pleasure boat.

Take the Dosan Line limited express from Kochi to Nakamura Station, in under 2 hours.
You can rent a bicycle near Nakamura Station and ride to the bridge. By car it is about 1 hr 15 min from Shimantocho-chuo IC.

Good to know
- The bridge has no side rails, so take care when crossing.
- Kayak, canoe and SUP tours and yakatabune pleasure boat rides are available on the river.
Tips for Muslim visitors
- The bridge has no side rails, which reduces the risk of it being washed away in floods.
- Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
- Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.
