Hirome Market

Hirome Market

ひろめ市場

Hirome Market is a lively indoor food hall in central Kochi City, often called "Kochi's kitchen". It is named after Hirome, a chief retainer of the old Tosa domain whose mansion once stood here. Around 60 small shops sell local dishes and goods, and people eat together at large shared tables. Kochi Castle is a short walk away.

  • Please do not bring food and drink from outside. The main areas are accessible by wheelchair.

Tips for Muslim visitors

  • Drinking is a big part of the atmosphere here, and many of the around 60 eateries serve local sake. The official tourism page lists no halal options, so check each stall's ingredients.
  • Sharing tables with strangers is normal and expected here. There are over 400 seats, so you can usually find a place even when it is busy.
  • Street food and market snacks often contain pork, lard or alcohol (such as mirin or sake), even when this is not obvious. Ask before you buy.
  • Some markets and shopping streets ask visitors not to eat while walking. Eat at the stall or in a rest area.
