Yokohama Chinatown
横浜中華街
Yokohama Chinatown grew after the port of Yokohama opened, when Chinese merchants came with Western traders and started businesses. Today it is one of the largest Chinatowns in the world, with more than about 600 shops and restaurants. Colorful gates called pailou, built following feng shui ideas, stand around the area. There are also two Chinese temples, Kanteibyo and Masobyo, which are places of worship.

Tips for Muslim visitors
- Pork is used in some Chinatown dishes; the official shop guide lists items such as pork shumai and pork soup, so check ingredients before buying.
- Yokohama has guidebooks for Muslim travellers (such as the Yokohama Muslim Eats & Pray Guidebook) that list restaurants and prayer spaces.
- Street food and market snacks often contain pork, lard or alcohol (such as mirin or sake), even when this is not obvious. Ask before you buy.
- Some markets and shopping streets ask visitors not to eat while walking. Eat at the stall or in a rest area.
