Sankeien Garden

三溪園

Sankeien is a large Japanese garden in Yokohama, about 180,000 square meters in size. It was opened in 1906 by Hara Sankei, a businessman who made his fortune in the silk trade and was also a tea master. The garden has 17 historic buildings, including 10 national Important Cultural Properties, set among ponds, hills and seasonal flowers.

Visitor information

Opening hours: 9:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30).
Closed: Closed December 26–31.
Admission: Adults (high school age and over) 900 yen; children (elementary and junior high school) 200 yen.
Getting there: From JR Negishi Station take Yokohama city bus 58 or 101 (about 10 min) to "Honmoku", then walk 10 minutes. From Yokohama Station East Exit, bus 8 or 168 (about 40 min) to "Sankeien Iriguchi", then 5 minutes.
Time needed: About 2 hours to see the whole garden (it depends on the person).

Good to know

Eating is not allowed in the Inner Garden or inside the former Yanohara House; it is allowed in the Outer Garden.
Free wheelchair loans at the Main Gate (4) and South Gate (1). Toilets large enough for wheelchairs are in 4 places in the garden. Free lockers near the Main Gate reception.
Pets are not allowed (except assistance dogs), and drones are not permitted.

Tips for Muslim visitors

The full walking course through the garden takes about 90-120 minutes on gravel paths, so comfortable shoes are recommended.
Eating and drinking are not allowed in the Inner Garden or inside the former Yanohara House.
Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.
