Great Buddha of Kamakura (Kotoku-in)
鎌倉大仏(高徳院)
The Great Buddha of Kamakura is the main image of Kotoku-in, a Buddhist temple. It is a large copper statue of Amida Buddha, about 11.3 meters tall and about 121 tons in weight, and it is a National Treasure of Japan. Work on the statue began in 1252. It first stood inside a hall, but the hall was destroyed by typhoons in the 14th century, and since then the Buddha has sat in the open air, which is unusual in Japan. Visitors can also go inside the statue.
