Hakone and Lake Ashi

箱根・芦ノ湖

Lake Ashi (Ashinoko) is a lake inside the Hakone caldera in western Kanagawa, at about 700 meters above sea level. It is famous for views of Mount Fuji over the water and for the red torii gate of Hakone Shrine on the shore. Visitors can walk along the lake, including part of the old Tokaido road lined with tall cedar trees, or ride sightseeing boats between the ports. Each season has its own beauty, from cherry blossoms in spring to autumn leaves.

Tips for Muslim visitors

  • The sightseeing boat trip takes about 30 minutes; schedules may change or trips may be cancelled in thick fog, strong wind or bad weather.
  • Hakone has no restaurants specifically for halal diets, but many restaurants will accommodate dietary needs if asked, and some offer halal options if contacted in advance.
