Enoshima Island

江の島

Enoshima is a small island in Fujisawa on the Shonan coast, with a beach, a temple and shrine, and many shops. From the island entrance, a historic shopping street with inns, restaurants and souvenir shops leads to Enoshima Shrine, passing a bronze torii gate rebuilt in 1821. On the top of the island is the Sea Candle, an observation lighthouse in the Samuel Cocking Garden. Another old shopping street continues down to the Iwaya caves.

Opening hours

Enoshima Escar (outdoor escalators to the top, 46 m height difference in about 4 minutes): 8:50–19:05. It goes up only, so you must use the stairs to come down.

Enoshima Sea Candle (observation lighthouse): 9:00–20:00, last entry 19:30; hours may be extended for events.

Enoshima Iwaya: 9:00–16:00, with longer hours in Golden Week and summer holidays. Open every day.

Admission

Enoshima Iwaya: adults (high school and older) 500 yen; elementary and junior high school students 200 yen.

Getting there

The bronze torii at the island's approach is a 12-minute walk from Katase-Enoshima Station (Odakyu Enoshima Line).

Enoshima Iwaya is about a 15–23 minute walk from Katase-Enoshima Station (Odakyu), Enoshima Station (Enoden) or Shonan-Enoshima Station (Shonan Monorail).

Tips for Muslim visitors

The Enoshima Escar outdoor escalator (three sections) goes uphill only, to the top of the island; you walk down by the stairs.
Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.
