Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine (Yakushima)

Yakushima is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage island known for its ancient Yakusugi cedar trees. Shiratani Unsuikyo is a forest park at 600 to 1,050 meters, covered with green mosses and ferns. Its forest is said to have inspired the film Princess Mononoke. Marked trails range from a short walk among old cedars to longer hikes to Taikoiwa rock.
Visitor information
- Opening hours
The Shiratani Unsuikyo administration building is open from 8:30 to 16:30.
- Admission
Forest fund / entry fee: 500 yen per person (high school age and up); 400 yen per person for groups of 15 or more. It is used to maintain the trails.
- Getting there
Route buses run from Miyanoura Port; it is about 25 minutes by car from Miyanoura.
- Time needed
Yayoisugi cedar course about 1 hour; Bugyosugi cedar course about 3 hours; Taikoiwa rock course about 4 hours.

Good to know
- Stay on the trails. After heavy rain the creeks become swollen and very dangerous, and in winter daylight passes quickly.
Tips for Muslim visitors
- The Ministry of the Environment lists the Shiratani Unsuikyo Yayoi-sugi Cedar course, the Bugyo-sugi Cedar course and the round trip to Taikoiwa Rock as taking about half a day.
- The full loop from the entrance via Tsujitoge Pass and Taikoiwa Rock and back along the Bugyo-sugi course takes about a day.
- Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
- Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.

- Food stalls and shops near popular sights usually do not have halal certification. Check the ingredients, or choose from the verified places on this site.
